We apply modern innovative data science techniques to solve local and global issues

OAITI began partially as a response to research done by our team on the statistical flaws in forensic science procedures. As scientific reports began to question the validity of many established methods, the scope of the importance of data analytics came into focus. Successful implementation of research in this area has enormous positive implications for wrongfully convicted people. This is a fundamental tenet of our vision for OAITI: The research we do should always focus on the societal influence it could potentially have, and not just be done for the sake of itself.

We work closely with the Center for Statistics and Applications in Forensic Evidence (CSAFE) on a number of projects to add statistical validity to forensic science procedures. One such project is BulletMatcher, an application and algorithm to assess the probability that two bullets were fired from the same gun barrel.

BulletMatcher

This app is a front-end to the bulletr package, developed in collaboration with CSAFE and Iowa State University. It provides a probabilistic assessment of whether two bullets were fired from the same gun barrel. The assessment is based on scientifically sound algorithms derived from a set of known bullets used to train a random forest ...
